Taiwan’s new NT$300 carbon fee deemed reasonable by Taipower and CPC Corporation

The Ministry of Environment’s new carbon fee of NT$300 per ton of CO2 has sparked mixed reactions from both environmentalists and industry leaders. Public interest groups believe that the fee is too low to drive impactful change, while some companies say the fee could hurt competitiveness and deter future investment. Taipower and CPC Corporation, however, have deemed it reasonable, given that decarbonization is now a global priority.

The Ministry set the new carbon fee on October 8, 2024, and will now proceed with the development of formal regulations and encouraging businesses to plan emissions reductions proactively.
