The shipping industry’s shift to methanol as a marine fuel is accelerating, with projections indicating that 212 methanol-capable container ships will be operational by 2030. However, the World Shipping Council warns of a significant supply gap, as global shipping is expected to require approximately 7 million metric tons of renewable methanol annually by 2030, while Europe’s production is projected to meet only 22% of this demand. Additionally, bio-methanol and e-methanol are substantially more expensive than conventional marine fuels, posing financial challenges for shipowners considering the transition.
