Maersk expands fuel strategy: methanol focus with bio-LNG in the mix

Maersk is expanding its fuel portfolio, adding LNG dual-fuel vessels alongside its methanol focus. The company will build 20 LNG dual-fuel ships, delivered between 2028 and 2030, while maintaining its stance that fossil LNG is not a decarbonization solution. However, Maersk now sees biomethane as a viable option due to improved scalability, particularly in Europe. Green methanol remains the company’s primary fuel choice through 2030, with ammonia expected to play a role by 2040. Meanwhile, Maersk christened its latest dual-fuel methanol vessel, Alexandra Maersk, at the Port of Felixstowe. This marks the fifth in a series of 18 methanol-powered ships set for delivery in 2024-2025.
