India’s peak power demand poised to surge 10% in 2025

India’s peak power demand is expected to rise by 9-10% this summer due to more frequent and intense heat waves. In May 2024, peak electricity demand exceeded 250 GW, driven by increased AC usage amid soaring temperatures. India’s electricity consumption surged in the first half of 2024 but slowed later due to milder weather. Over the past decade, peak demand jumped 68%, straining the grid. With economic growth and rising AC ownership, electricity demand is projected to grow by 6.3% annually from 2025 to 2027, posing challenges for India’s power infrastructure.
