Hapag-Lloyd sees 19% increase in bunker usage in 2024 due to red sea route changes

Hapag-Lloyd’s bunker fuel consumption rose by 19% in 2024, reaching approximately 4.7 million metric tons, mainly due to diversions around the Red Sea, which led to longer routes and higher fuel use. The company spent €2.65 billion ($2.87 billion) on bunker costs. Despite a decrease in average bunker prices, the increased fuel usage raised overall expenses.
