In 2024, COSCO led in vessel count, while MSC dominated in dwt. COSCO ordered 102 ships (12.0M dwt), focusing on diverse segments, while MSC secured 74 vessels (13.0M dwt), mainly container ships. Both were active in newbuildings and second-hand acquisitions. The top 10 investors ordered 487 vessels (19.6% of total), including Eastern Pacific Shipping, Cido Shipping, and China Merchants Group. 2024 was a record year for new orders, but 2025 is expected to see a decline due to weaker freight markets, US tariffs, and regulatory uncertainty. Orders may drop to 100M dwt (from 193.1M dwt in 2024), with shipbuilding costs expected to fall over 10%.
